The two greatest problems associated with PTCA are abrupt or threatened vessel closure and restenosis, stents were initially thought to be the remedy. Unfortunately, this has not proven so: the material of which the stent is composed, along with stent-induced vascular injury, has led to thrombotic effects. Numerous pharmacological agents have been tested in order to reduce acute thrombosis and the hyperproliferative cellular response. Many of these work.
